What is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is a federal holiday dedicated to honoring all military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died while serving, Veterans Day celebrates all veterans—living and deceased—who have worn the uniform in defense of our nation.

The Origin of Veterans Day

Veterans Day has its roots in the end of World War I. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice was signed between the Allied nations and Germany, bringing a temporary cessation to the hostilities of World War I—"the war to end all wars."

One year later, in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day, stating: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory."

In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the commemoration by striking the word "Armistice" and inserting "Veterans." President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation on June 1, 1954, and November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Why We Honor Veterans on November 11th
